Sample Searches

1. Quick  Search      

You would like to find the number of occurrences of the term "Harlem renaissance" in Literature Online.

Enter "Harlem renaissance" in the Quick Search box found on the Literature Online homepage.

Click the search button or press Enter on your keyboard.


2. Author Search

You would like to locate the works of Langston Hughes (key figure of the Harlem renaissance movement).

Select Authors either from the Home page or from the Author tab > Search > Authors

Enter Langston Hughes in the Author Name box or Use the Look up link and type Hughes into the Find Author(s) box.

Select "Hughes, Langston, 1902-1967", add to search, and then click Search.


3. Nationality

You would like to locate Puerto Rican writers in Literature Online. Among them.Jésus Cólon (father of the Nuyorican movement of Puerto Rican writers in New York) and others.

Select Authors either from the Home page or from the Author tab > Search > Authors

Enter Puerto Rican in the Nationality search box, then click Search.

In the alphabetical list you will find Colón, Jesús, 1901-1974 and many others.


4. Text Search

You are searching for "Rajmohan's wife", the first novel by Bankim Chatterjee (key author in Indian literature).

Select Texts tab > Search > Prose.

Enter Rajmohan's wife in the Title text box, then click Search

You will notice on the result page that the author is also called Cattopadhyaya, Bankimacandra.


5. Criticism

You are looking for texts by Rabindranath Tagore (a contemporary of Bankim Chatterjee).

Select: Criticism tab > All Criticism

In the Author/reviewer field, enter Rabindranath Tagore.


6. Reference

You are searching for Reference material on the Nuyorican movement.

Select: Reference tab > Search > Reference

Enter Nuyorican into the Keywords box.

Click Search.

The results list will display reference works and encyclopedias about the movement, Latino literature and related authors, biographies and bibliographies.
