ProQuest Civil War Era: Printing Tips

A guide to ProQuest Civil War Era - a comprehensive collection of primary source materials that were previously unavailable digitally.

Printing Tips

1. ProQuest and Adobe Print Options

Most of the time, it is preferable to use the print button provided by ProQuest over the print feature provided by Adobe Reader. Often, the ProQuest print option will distribute the article over several pages to provide a better printed image. Adobe Reader may compress the article to fit on a single printed page, making it more difficult to read. The ProQuest print option will also aim to re-orient the article image (landscape or portrait) to best suit the size and shape of the article.

If using the ProQuest print option does not yield the desired results, we recommend trying the Adobe print option.

2. Adobe Snapshot Tool

Once you have identified an article segment or image that you would like to print, follow these steps:

  • If you are viewing an image or article that has been blocked due to copyright in the Full text - PDF format, go to Other formats and click Page view - PDF. Otherwise, you can follow the next steps in the Full text - PDF format if you prefer.
  • Click the Snapshot tool in the Adobe toolbar. (Note: You may need to add the Snapshot tool to the toolbar. See instructions below.)
  • Click and drag to select the area that you would like to print.

3. Adobe Print

Click the Adobe Print option to display the Print window.

  • In the Print window, make sure the Print Range is set to Selected graphic and adjust the Page Scaling if necessary to fit the article segment or image to the page, and click OK.

To install the Adobe Snapshot Tool in Adobe Reader consult the Adobe help file or follow these steps for Adobe Reader Version 10:

  • Right click anywhere on the grey toolbar in Adobe Reader.
  • Select Edit and click Take Snapshot to add the Snapshot tool to the Adobe toolbar.
