The outstanding digital collections that make up Early European Books can now also be analyzed visually with the new Interactive Historical Map.
Newly enhanced metadata has extended search, retrieval and discovery capabilities to deliver an improved user experience for students, scholars, faculty and library staff alike. Through a combination of amending and fully standardizing metadata across Early European Books collections, it's now possible to demonstrate the Place of Publication of the majority of titles as pinpoints on a scalable map.
Such functionality works to provide not just a novel means of searching the product but delivers the potential to visualize and interpret its contents in new and exciting ways.
Historical and Linguistic Variants. This search feature expands the search query by including variants from the CERL Thesaurus.
CERL Thesaurus
This collaborative project by members of the Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL, www.cerl.org), contains forms of imprint places, imprint names, personal names and corporate names found in Early Modern printed books, including variant spellings, forms in Latin and other languages, and pseudonyms. The Thesaurus, comprising more than 700,000 records, has been integrated into the search feature of Early European Books, allowing users to search for modern forms of city names in a variety of languages (Venezia, Venice, Venedig) and return hits for historical and Latin variants, or search for personal names such as Virgil and retrieve hits for 'Virgilius Maro, Publius' or 'Vergilio'.
In this page we will show the unique search features for Early European Books. Go to the Platform LibGuide for a complete guide to ProQuest's search and display features.
The Interactive Map can be found by clicking on the link in the Basic Search page:
The data points represent single books located on the map based on their Place of Publication, can be selected based on Language, Source Library or USTC Subject Classification (in the picture) and may be further filtered by Date of Publication.
Clicking on these pinpoints accesses title page thumbnail images beyond which the user may drill down further to the full record.
Click this link if you would like the result list without variants.
Please see the Early English Books Online libguide for more information about variants.
There are three ways to display the Document Images once the Document View is open:
1 - the Full text tab shows the full Document images of the scanned book (the number of images which make up the document image is displayed in the box between the navigation arrows).
2 - the View thumbnail page images link will open the Thumbnails page. Clicking on any of the thumbnails on that page will lead to the relevant Document Image page.
3 - the Full text - PDF tab shows the PDF version of the document image, that can be read online or saved offline.
4 - the third Tab will show the full Indexing details of the document.
You can open a bigger version of the viewer by clicking the plus magnifier at the top left corner of each document page .
This will open the flash viewer in a new window - you will need to close the window to return to the original document image page.
In the Flash version of the document image, you will see a set of controls displayed below the image. By default the image is shown fully zoomed out and centered in the Flash viewer, you can use the controls to enlarge or decrease the size of the image, rotate the image clockwise and counter-clockwise, and move it in different directions.
The navigator panel below the image displays a sequence of thumbnails of the pages and highlights the one you are currently displaying.
To move the image click the image itself and drag it in the chosen direction.
In the Full Text tag of the Document view, the display can be switched to show the Thumbnails of the entire book scans. Every part of the book has been scanned. By clicking on the single thumbnail the page is displayed in full size.
The Thumbnails display can be used to preview instances of all the different document features within a given document. Each image on the Thumbnails display is accompanied by a list of the document features associated with the page shown.
The indexing details section of the record contains as much information about an item as possible. The details may vary depending on the availability of information. See more information about indexed fields in the Searchable Fields page.
The Pages, Physical description and Document note fields are searched in the Document Note (NT field).
